Dreaming of a destination wedding abroad?

Saying yes in a green fairytale setting

Have you always imagined saying your vows in a breathtaking location abroad? Whether it’s on a pristine white beach, surrounded by olive trees in Southern Europe, with a volcanic mountain backdrop on Tenerife, or any other dream destination — getting married abroad is truly magical. But let’s be honest, it does come with a bit of planning! I travel a lot and have been lucky enough to photograph beautiful weddings and shoots both in and outside of Europe.

Since I spend a few months each year living on the Canary Islands (Tenerife), I keep capturing love stories from here as well. My husband and I actually got married on Tenerife at the end of 2022, so I totally get what it’s like to plan a wedding abroad.

Planning a destination wedding? One of the most important decisions is choosing a photographer who matches your vision and style. Whether they are based near or far isn’t as crucial as finding someone who understands your story and can capture it authentically. Here are some tips to help you make that choice!

Finding the perfect wedding photographer

A great destination wedding photographer doesn’t just love to travel. They also know how to deal with the unique challenges that come with it. Things like unexpected delays or changing weather can easily throw things off. That’s why it’s crucial to choose someone who adapts quickly and knows how to make the most of any situation.

Why language matters

IIt’s not just about speaking your own language. It’s about your photographer really getting what’s being said during the ceremony and speeches. When I’m photographing, I’m not just looking through the lens — I’m listening too. It helps me capture those moments that truly matter, like a heartfelt speech or an emotional vow.

Local photographer vs. bringing your own

Hiring a local photographer means they probably know the area well. They’ve likely shot at your venue before, know the best spots, and understand how to use the light. That local know-how can be great. But it can also make the shots feel predictable if they always follow the same routine.

When a photographer works at the same place often, they might lose that fresh perspective that someone from outside the area brings. Looking back, some of my best weddings were at places I’d never been before. A new environment sparks my creativity. I’m seeing everything with fresh eyes, soaking it all in. That excitement makes me create my most inspired work.

Final thoughts

Choosing the right photographer for your destination wedding is about finding someone whose style and approach fit your vision. It’s not just about location or logistics — it’s about feeling connected and trusting they’ll capture your story authentically.

I believe every wedding is unique. It deserves to be documented in a way that feels true to you. My approach is all about storytelling and capturing the moments that matter most, no matter where in the world your love story takes you. Let’s make your wedding unforgettable!
