5 Tips for Spontaneous & Unposed Wedding Photos

5 Tips for Spontaneous & Unposed Wedding Photos

Capturing Real Moments

One of the most common things I hear from couples is: “We’re not photogenic, and we really don’t want to pose.” Sound familiar? You’re not alone! Most of my couples prefer natural, unposed wedding photography that captures the real vibe of their day. And guess what? It’s totally possible! My style is all about capturing what’s really happening, without making it feel staged or forced. Only during the couple shoot and group photos do I guide you a bit.

And yes, feeling a little awkward at first is completely normal! It’s not every day you’re in front of a camera, and being the center of attention can feel a bit out of your comfort zone. As a photographer who specializes in luxury destination weddings, I know how important it is to make couples feel at ease, helping them relax and enjoy every moment in front of the lens. I prefer to think of it as giving subtle guidance rather than posing. Sometimes just a tiny tweak in your posture can make a world of difference. So here are my top 5 tips to help you look natural, spontaneous, and absolutely radiant in your wedding photos!

1. Choose the Right Photographer

It all starts with feeling comfortable with your photographer. If you feel uneasy around the person behind the camera, it’s going to show in your photos. Make sure you pick a photographer you trust completely, someone who makes you feel at ease and who you can just be yourself with. Opt for a professional who specializes in luxury destination weddings, as they know how to handle diverse settings and create a relaxed, elegant atmosphere. Once you’ve got that, you’re already halfway there!

2. Embrace Natural Movement

Movement is your best friend when it comes to spontaneous photos. Don’t stand stiffly – walk hand in hand, sway together, dance a little, or just goof around! The key is to keep moving. Even small actions, like gently brushing hair from each other’s faces or wrapping your arms around one another, can make photos look much more alive and authentic. Movement also adds an editorial and cinematic touch, which is perfect for storytelling photography.

3. Forget About the Camera

Try not to think too much about the camera being there. Instead, focus on each other. Share a joke, whisper sweet nothings, or just enjoy the moment. I’ll guide you through little prompts and activities that help shift your attention back to your partner, making your connection shine through in the photos.

4. Take Your Time

Give yourselves plenty of time for the photo session. Rushing will only add to your nerves. Once you get used to the camera being around, you’ll start to feel more comfortable. Plus, having extra time allows us to explore the beautiful location you’ve chosen and find those hidden gems that add something extra to your wedding story.

5. Choose the Right Time of Day

While this tip isn’t about unposed wedding photography., it makes a huge difference in how your photos turn out. The best light is during the ‘golden hour’ – just before sunset when the light is soft and flattering. Avoid harsh midday sun if possible, as it can create unflattering shadows and make you squint. As a luxury destination wedding photographer, I know how to make the most of diverse lighting situations, ensuring your photos look stunning no matter the conditions.

Bonus: Embrace Imperfection

Remember, it’s okay if everything doesn’t go exactly as planned. Sometimes the most beautiful, authentic moments happen in the in-betweens – when you’re not trying too hard. Trust the process, stay in the moment, and your love will naturally take center stage. Let’s appreciate authenticity over perfection and create some unposed wedding photography.
